Hi,
I'm looking to replace the CD drive in my laptop for one that's capable of
burning CDRs and DVDs. Is this doable? Is there such a drive? Is it easy to
swap them? Where could I get one?

You can remove your drive, remove the cradle, remove the connector and
see it the drive meets the 5 inch slimline format - it should also be
labeled as such. The OEM replacements have no bezel (the trim piece
with the original eject button) so you should remove the original bezel
to see if the hardware eject button is located properly on its OEM
bezel. I used the above drive as a replacement on my Sony laptop and it
installed flawlessly, narry a coaster. I've also replaced a CD drive on
a Gateway laptop with a slimline CD burner. In both cases I had to use
the original connector and the bezels fit as they did on the original
drives. OTOH, there are postings that the bezel did not fit but the
replacement drive worked fine without it.
If you go this route, order from a source that will allow a refund on
return. Newegg does not on some of their OEM replacements.
A cheaper alternative is a USB2 and/or Firewire drive enclosure and a
desktop DVD drive. You can put this together for about $100.
