SLI power consumption was a massive 605 Watts under a full load, but only 185 Watts at idle

my god....

How do you know if you are pulling 605 watts at load? If you measured the power with something like a Kill-a-Watt meter, you forgot to factor in PSU efficiency and the fact that PSU ratings are based upon the power it can provide rather than the power it pulls from the wall.

600 watts from the wall with a PSU of 80% efficiency means that the the PSU is providing 480 watts to the load. In this case, a 650 watt PSU would be would be running around 75% of capacity.
