Is anything beyond a GTX 460 overkill for 1680 x 1050 resolution?

I have an Asus P5Q Deluxe motherboard sporting a E8500 @ 4.06 Ghz, PC Power & Cooling 750w PSU, 8800 GTS G92 512mb GPU in a Antec 900 case. 22" 1680x1050 monitor.

I was thinking about getting a GTX 480 or HD 5870 but I'm wondering if those big boys are overkill for my monitors native resolution. I hear good things about the GTX 460 1GB card. Would I see much of a difference in frame rates between a 460 and a 480 at this resolution?

  1. This may help you.

1680x1050 is one of those resolution thats getting to higher end, so according to benchmarks, yes you will see a difference in frame rates.

However with games like Dirt2, you're FPS will be so high that the difference will not matter...
  2. Especially if you overclock the card I would say there's no need for something better at that resolution. IMO there will be two games where you will see a real worthwhile advantage: Crysis and Metro 2033.
