hey guys, I just wanna know what to choose from THOSE 2 cards, so please no alternatives as in "for an extra 20$ you could get the xxxxx which would totally rule out those two" :kaola:

more GPU Memory doesn't mean a better card, the DDR3 will out perform the DDR2, the DDR3 is newer technology than the DDR2!!

8600 GT 512MB/GDDR2:

Memory CLock: 1000Mhz
Memory Bus : 128MB

8600 GT 256MB/GDDR3:

Memory Clock: 1400 Mhz
Memory Bus : 128MB

The memory bus widths are the same but look at the Memory Clocks, faster processing, and better performances!! You can't compare GDDR2 to GDDR3, the same way you can't compare GDDR3 to GDDR5...

hope this helps!!

Dane Bouwer: no worries man, thanks for the help !!!
zipzoomflyhigh: mmm yeah I know but that is my budget from which I cannot extend with not even a dime :p

anyway, bought a MUCH MUCH MUCH cheaper 8500GT at 256MB/DDRII for about 23$ :D and runs pretty good I'd say (Prince of Persia Forgotten Sands runs around 20-30 with everything low)

If those are the only option then absolutely get that DDR3 version, it's better than DDR2 version... :)
But, are you sure those are the only option? 8600GT is an old tech, you'll better with a new tech like GT240 (minimum) or HD5670...
