Need a budget built for vm, server and basic gaming

Hi guys, I now need a desktop with better CPU and larger RAM for my virtual machines. At least 2 to 3 cores will be real busy. I also need to run some servers and use this rig on the remote desktop, which probably means 24hr running. Finally, I hope it could run latest games in mid or low :p . I don't have many ideas, except considering the amd x3 or x4 for cpu, and ATI 5770 for gpu, 4GB RAM. Really need your advices, thank you~!

Approximate Purchase Date: before mid oct.

Budget Range: around $500

System Usage from Most to Least Important: virtual machines and servers, gaming.

Parts Not Required: monitor/speaker/keyboard/mouse/

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: newegg.com

  1. for vM's you'll want to try to get a quad core. the AMD Athlon II X4 Model 620 (2.6 GHz) is the same price as an X3 450 (3.2 GHz). for only $10 more, you could get the X3 640 at 3.0 GHz. The 640, 4 GB, a 500 GB HD, and a 550W Modular PSU, and a 5750 or GTS 450 with an inexpensive case like Rosewill Challenger or Destroyer, shoudl come out with combos around $500

Sometime in the next week or two, The AMD 6XXX should come out. If pricing stays similar, the 6750 and 6770 will be great deals.
  2. Thanks for your review. I'm trying the phenom x4 955 thus hope the rig can go under 550 with video card or 450 without the video card(and wait for the 6xxx series). Obviously the built I gather went over budget. Where can I reduce the cost?

  3. a few suggestions: go back to a 640 X4 or 445 X3 processor. you don't need the eSata brackets

try an AS Rock 880G Mobo, its lacks USB3 and SATA 3, but its only $59. one with both is $79

try a less expensive Sapphire 5770, or even jump down to a GTS 450

a 450 to 550W power supply should be enough.
  4. Thanks for your time and advice. Then maybe I should sacrifices some gaming for CPU and MOBO. I would need more CPU Power and a stable motherboard than good video card. And I'm considering upgrading this rig rather than dumping it after two or three years. Would this MOBO be to much for my built?
