I run my X31 on AC power quite a bit of the time so the battery
stays out a lot. The problem is the big gaping hole in the bottom and
the fact that IBM only put a rubber bumper on the bottom right side of the
case so the laptop rocks back and forth without the battery installed. If
it's in the Ultrabase that's not a problem, but I don't use that all the
time either.

Basically, what I'm looking for is an empty plastic battery plug
that you can put in to stop this and also keep junk out of the battery
bay. Haven't found anything on IBM's page, by calling them, or through
Google so I thought I would ask here.

My answer to the same problem on various laptops is to buy an as-is
battery off eBay. You can leave it in there and not care about killing
it, since it's probably already not too good. Plus if there is a power
failure, you'll probably get a little time out of the "sacrificial"
battery, which you won't out of a plastic plug.

On occasion I've made my own weight-saver by pulling all the cells out
of a battery and gluing the shell back together, too.

Just use an old failed battery.

Ended up doing both, buying an aftermarket battery from someone
that regularly sells them and had a few returned as duds so he sold one
relatively cheap. It was a dud, probably the IC charging circuitry and
not the cells so if anyone wants those for cheap to refurbish a battery
let me know they are supposedly Japanse cells (but I see no markings).
It was quite a pain getting the thing apart while trying not to destroy
the case though, they're glued together, at least this after market one
was.

Now I have a weight saver plug, but a half dead battery would
have been nice too like you said for the quick outlet switch or
occasional power blip.

Glad it worked out for you. Original batteries are usually
ultrasonically welded, not glued.
