Does anyone know where I can find details of the TWAIN interface? Or
familiar enough to answer this question?

My scanner is 48 bit. My current application is only 8 bit per color
but if I were to install a 12 bit editor, what doe the data from the
scanner to the application look like? Is it 12 bit, or 8 bit, or what?

It depends on the driver.. If it came with your scanner, it's
probably safe to assume the driver is capable of handling all the
information the scanner can produce.

An easy way to check is to do a scan at high resolution and create
an uncompressed TIFF file.

If the file size in bytes is approximately 3X the number of pixels
in the file then it's 24 bit.

If the file size in bytes is approximately 6X the number of pixels
in the file, then it's a 48 bit image.

I doubt you'll see 8 bit (unless you save as grey scale).

Depends on the Twain driver. It could be anything.

If you tell us what scanner you have, and what editor you're
thinking of using, maybe someone can answer your question.

He already told you, the scanner is 48 bit and the application is the
8 bit one.

Jeezz, you'll be wanting to know the OS next.

I have a Visioneer 8920. I mostly use PSP 8, but am willing to upgrade
to another editor if necessary.

What I seem to be getting from this thread is that the TWAIN standard
isn't all that standard.

And as far as saving to a TIFF or anything else, I can find out what I
need even without saving the file. The driver imports the scan
directly into the editor, so no 'saving' is involved.

The specs for that scanner list it as "24-bit output", so trying to
get anything more out of it will be a waste of time.

Try Umax or another brand that outputs more than 24 bits.
