Worth the upgrade from E8500/780i-sli/GTX260-216sli TO i7 950/UD3R???

Is it worth upgrading my rig?

Current Rig:
E8500 oc 4.04ghz
EVGA gtx 260 sli oc'd
4 gigs ram 850mhz

I was bored yesterday and bought (2) GTX 470's, swapped my 260's out and ran some tests...

My Vantage GPU score on the 260's is 20k, I was able to get 27k from the 470's.

No increase in Crysis or Bad Company 2

Is my rig holding my video cards back?

I want to upgrade to the Gigabyte UD3R/ i7 950 / and the 470's...

Worth it? or should I wait?

  1. Yes, but it won't be cheap. Frys had this cpu for $200 the other day, same as microcenter. 4 gigs of 1600 ddr3 is around $40-$50 after rebate. Boards start at around $170. Sell your old stuff first; if you don't get any decent offers, I would keep running it as is. It's not that slow.
  2. Some games now use quads, and certainly more will in the future as they become more mainstream. However, you are looking quite easily at a $400.00 upgrade by the time you get a new motherboard, cpu, and other things that we happen to get sucked into buying. If you have $400.00 that you aren't afraid to loose then sure. Might I suggest this path though: Scour ebay for some of the core 2 quads. Anything from a Q9400 up should be as easily clockable as the e8500, and will give you more performance on the cheap for a while. The core 2 Quads are still a force to be reckoned with.

Practically a new build @ just under $645. I think it's worth it.
  4. Are unable to max out any games to the fullest?

New CPUs are right around the corner so if you can hold off for a bit I'd do so.

The E8x00 CPUs will bottleneck GTX 470 SLI slightly, but it shouldn't be too much (assuming your resolution is 1920 or lower), and the games should still be at more than playable frames.

I'd hold out for sandybridge. :) E8x00 CPUs (especially at 4ghz) are still badass gaming CPUs.
