Upgrading gaming system

Current specs are:

e6600

Gigabyte 965p-ds3

2gb OCZ ram

600w OCZ psu (think its dead)

Right now the computer wont turn on because either the mobo fried or the psu is dead. When I boot the computer, the gpu runs at 100 percent and there isnt any display on screen. So it seems I have to replace the mobo, psu, and the cpu because the e6600 wont fit on a recent mobo

AMD 3+ 955

Asus M4A79XTD

2x2gb G.Skill ripjaws

650w Corsair 650w cmpsu

Anyway, this costs me around 450 or so without price matching in Canadian dollars. If anyone has any better (cheaper)suggestions, I'd appriciate any feedbacks. Thanks.

More about upgrading gaming system
  1. ^ Nice parts...but what graphic card do you have ? Also what will the PC mainly be used for ?
  2. I currently have an 8800gts 512mb with a tad overclock. I dont have much money to upgrade the gpu as well but am hoping that I will get a 460 1gb eventually and perhaps sli two of those along. The computer is used primarily for gaming (sc2, hon, l4d2). Oh, and is a 650w enough to power a sli? Thanks.
  3. here's what I'd suggest then: downgrade from the 790X to an AS Rock 770 Extreme 3.

    Its about $75 US.

also a 450 PSU would do for a single 460 1GB. 550 or 600 wold do for SLI (but SLI on AMD is not so good, best to stick to single cards for now)

    Get the Intel i5-750
    4 GB of DDR3 RAM
550W PSU, you wont really need 650
I suggest an XFX Radeon HD 5770 (Juniper XT)
  5. luckily my psu ocz gamexstream didnt burn out (no capacitors burnt, or any smells) so I can stay away from buying a new psu.

I cant seem to find an Asrock 770 X3 (Extreme3?) on ncix but found one on newegg canada for 90 something.

Also, I found a intel 760 for 210 and was wondering if its worth it.

(Cant seem to link for some reason :\ )

It'll be primarily for gaming purposes and will overclock cpu and gpu. Thanks for the supportive feedback, appriciate it.
  6. Most definitely and Im glad your PSU is working :)

If you wanna overclock, you may need an aftermarket cooler depending on how much you wanna overclock

The i5-760 comes with a HSF (Heatsink & Fan)
  7. Just got an email of a special two day sale which the intel i5 750 is going for 169.99 which is awesome!

Now i just need an intel mobo thats perfect on price / performence issue. If anyone has any suggestions for cheap mobos, please post them! (NCIX)

the cheapest 2-PCIe16 board out there at CA$99.99

it's two PCIe-16s are actually 8x/8x, which will lose about 2% over a 16x. (Not really significant). Just that it will be 8x with 1 or 2 cards.

If you don't plan to SLI, this single x16 slot gigabyte is $85:
