New DVD in drive but No Free Space on DVD?

Hey All:
I can't understand this: I get a brand new DVD+R disc and put it in my computer disc drive. I check the properties of my DVD+R and it shows that all the space is used. What is going on here?
I can't even figure out how to format the DVD+R disc before I do anything.
What am I doing wrong here?

Do u download the dvd drive Firmware?Hi cherryrudkinso: My problem has been solved. Somebody else from yahoo answers told me about using a DVD burner. I have Sonic by Roxio. Seems this advice has helped. Because the Sonic program tells me the data specifics regarding free space on the DVD disc. Now I am trying to learn how this program works, so I can properly use it. Thanks for trying to help.
