Going for first build, which Processor?

So I'm finally going to start my first build but just wondering on which processor I should go for, he is my question, my brother says he has an Intel Core 2 Extreme I can have for free (don't know which model, waiting to hear back) or he can most likely get a discount on an i5 or i7 for me and the price will be between $75-$1000 depending what I want just to let him know the specs and model #. So I'm pretty exicted about the Core extreme and wondering if I should even bother with an i5 or i7? The build will be mostly for gaming.

If I do go for the Core 2 Extreme I'm looking at these components, I would love input about any of them - yeah or neah

HeatSink - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835154001

Case & Power supply combo - http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.512897

RAM - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231277

MotherBoard - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131639

VideoCard - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130563

DVD Drive - Not worried about it now will get later

HDD - Taking my existing one from computer I think it's this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136490&cm_re=wd10ears-_-22-136-490-_-Product

So would it be worth it to invest this money in a Core 2 Extreme? Looking at everything it seems I could have a pretty decent system for under $600

Thanks

You're wasting good money. Get a P55 build instead and go with an i5 750 or 760. If you live near a microcenter. I think the i5 750 is only $150. The 760 is $170.

The build will be mostly for gaming and downloading.

Just wondering what I am missing here from the benchmark test's it seems the Core 2 extreme hold's it self pretty good. Especially for gaming.

I will most likely just go for the i5 but just curious if I will be able to match the build for around $600? Also if I did just go for the extreme the only thing I would need to replace in the future would be the motherboard and cpu correct? and since I can get the extreme for free the only money I would be wasting would be for the motherboard am I right or is there other stuff i would not be able to re-use?

Thanks again guys for the info, like i said this will be my first build and just really unsure what i want to do.

you'd most likely be needing a psu upgrade as well, plus you change the mobo, you may need a newer standard of ram, may as well just buy a new system now tbh, save hassle and cash later, drop your details on on of these

and you'll get a few decent suggestions I think
you could maybe consider the duo as a learning system, build a cheap rig and play about with cooling/overclocking/poking with a fork etc, that way you have a system to check ideas out on before risking your new shiny rig

Thanks Moto.

After doing a little research on the computer I have now I found out I actually have a 775 socket board that I can through that core 2 extreme in (thought my motherboard was going to be to old since I'm still running a pentium D, but it is a 775) So I will just do that and give my computer now to my son (it will be enough for him to run Starcraft 2 & any other games he wants on decent settings) and buy a new i5 system to build for myself.
