Harddrive failure?

So my wife booted her pc up this morning, everything powered on normally but monitor stayed black. Did all the troubleshooting I know, and finally was able to get into the bios(Asrock 970 extreme 3 UEFI) in the boot area, it didn't show the harddrive like it normally does. Did a manual power down of system, this time it booted to a screen that said "Harddisk read error" Cntrl alt delete to continue. Did this a couple of times, and finally it booted normally.

Is this a sign of the HDD going gills up on me? if so are there any tests I can do to make completely sure that it is before I fork out money to get a new one.

yes u can do test if u have wd download dldiag software and run extended test if seagate seatools

do the test and back up your data before you loose everything your drive gone need to be replace .
