I have a Compaq sr1230nx with a single 160GB HDD in it. I would like to add a segate 500GB drive to the machine (as an additional data drive) without reinstalling windows at all. The chipset is via km400, if that helps at all.

I have read that I have to enable SATA somewhere in the BIOS, but I cannot figure out how to do that. The drive is fine as I have had other computers recognize it. Thanks

VIA's KM400 chipset incorporates the VT8237R SATA controller. This controller is limited to SATA 1 speeds and will not autonegotiate a reduced link speed with SATA 2 or SATA 3 drives. Make sure your Seagate drive has a functional 1.5Gbps speed reduction jumper.
