Laptop bad display external monitors

Hello,
I have a Toshiba laptop and the display is bad. I have an external monitor hooked up working fine. I only have one VGA output and no DVI. ATI Radeon 3100 graphics card. Can I use a vga spliter cable for dual monitor support for different applications on the two monitors?

It would clone the outputs if it works at all.
For your needs, the only solution is a DualHead2Go, but its sorta expensive.
