So I am building a new system (my old mobo fried) and so far all I've really got decided is the case (Antec 300 Illusion) and the Memory (8gig Ripjaw 1600 Cas 8). I am 99% sure I am going with the i5 2500K because I don't really see the i7 2600k being worth the extra $100, but I am stuck on the motherboard.

I have been looking at the MSI Z68A GD-80 G3 which just came out, but from what I am reading, people are making it sound like PCI express 3.0 isnt even really worth it unless I'm planning to buy an Ivybridge processor down the line?

Can someone explain why that is? Does the processor have to work with PCIe 3.0 in order for a graphics card to get the full effects? I was under the impression a pcie3.0 graphics card didnt have anything to do with the cpu.

I wasn't planning on buying a 2500k and then buying a new cpu in a year, I was hoping this would run a solid 3-4 years like my last build before upgrading again.

Thanks guys!

Ok, so first of all there are no PCI 3.0 cards available, and any 3.0 architecture on a MB is going to be early version and is probably going to have issues once it is officially supported.

Sandy Bridge will be able to run the slot, but it won't be able to take advantage of the full bandwidth, that is one of the things Ivy Bridge does.

Right now, I wouldn't go for a board that is 3.0 because it is going to be more expensive for something that is not going to be used for a while at least. And it will probably have issues due the the nature that nothing is currently being made for 3.0

Hey Daniel,

Thanks for the update! I actually did already figure all that out, but it is nice to have confirmation all the same! I actually did end up buying a GD65 G3, because it ended up being on sale for cheaper than the B3, and I realized I really dont have a use for the GD80 compared to using just the GD65.

Now hopefully the G3 isnt TOO buggy for me lol
