Should I go with the i7 950 or the i7 2600k with a multiple-GPU setup.

If you are using CS5, I would suggest nVidia GPUs as After Effects supports CUDA which speeds things up a lot. (Wrong, I just read http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/adobe-cs5-cuda-64-bit,2770-6.html, and discovered that it does not. But, if you are using CS4 [or older], I suggest you take a look at the previous page of that review.) I would probably expect an overclocked 2600K to be faster than a 950, except possibly in memory speed, although that would probably be minor, and in triple channel Crossfire/SLI, unless the SB motherboard has a splitter.

If you need performance in AE, then CUDA capability should be a primary consideration.

4.5 GHz is no picnic as you can see here....

In gaming performance, the 6970 runs pretty much even with the 570 however.....benchmarkreviews writes:

My guess is that as drivers mature some performance marks will change for both cards and prices will adjust accordingly, but if ya wanna do AE, then CUDA support has gotta be the deciding factor.

After Effects CS5 does not support CUDA, so no point at this stage.

I planned on waiting anyway but I have heard people say the SB processors will not allow x16 x8 x8 configs, though I though the MOBO usually decided that. I would be willing to pull out $500 for the MOBO though. Is x16 really much better than x8.

As of right now, x8 is only slightly slower(not really noticeable) than x16. You shouldn't notice a difference between them.

The mobo does decide that if they use chips other than just the Intel chipset. That's how 1156 boards can have enough lanes for triple/quad card setups, but it does add a ton of latency compared to just using Intel's way.

It will probably be awhile before we get boards that can tri-fire.
