Should I go with the i7 950 or the i7 2600k with a multiple-GPU setup.

I will install 3 radeon HD 6970s and I need preformance. I also use Photoshop and AE a lot. I game too. I plan to OC to 4.5GHz or 4GHz. Which would offer more total system performance.

Thanks :D

If you are using CS5, I would suggest nVidia GPUs as After Effects supports CUDA which speeds things up a lot. (Wrong, I just read http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/adobe-cs5-cuda-64-bit,2770-6.html, and discovered that it does not. But, if you are using CS4 [or older], I suggest you take a look at the previous page of that review.) I would probably expect an overclocked 2600K to be faster than a 950, except possibly in memory speed, although that would probably be minor, and in triple channel Crossfire/SLI, unless the SB motherboard has a splitter.

If you need performance in AE, then CUDA capability should be a primary consideration.

4.5 GHz is no picnic as you can see here....

In gaming performance, the 6970 runs pretty much even with the 570 however.....benchmarkreviews writes:

My guess is that as drivers mature some performance marks will change for both cards and prices will adjust accordingly, but if ya wanna do AE, then CUDA support has gotta be the deciding factor.

After Effects CS5 does not support CUDA, so no point at this stage.

I use CS5 and will want to use CS6 and CS7 on this machine when they are released. My budget is $4000 but I don't want to go for the poor price/performance of the 980X.

I will have 3 monitors so I need the extra VRAM of the 6970. AE is a hobby, not a proffsion, in my situation.

My suggestion is to wait and see how the 2600K performs in your situation before making your decision. The triple channel RAM of the 950 may be an advantage, but maybe not.

I planned on waiting anyway but I have heard people say the SB processors will not allow x16 x8 x8 configs, though I though the MOBO usually decided that. I would be willing to pull out $500 for the MOBO though. Is x16 really much better than x8.

It would require a motherboard such as the Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD7 or ASUS Maximus IV Extreme. The Asus seems to support x16 x16 x8.

As of right now, x8 is only slightly slower(not really noticeable) than x16. You shouldn't notice a difference between them.

The mobo does decide that if they use chips other than just the Intel chipset. That's how 1156 boards can have enough lanes for triple/quad card setups, but it does add a ton of latency compared to just using Intel's way.

It will probably be awhile before we get boards that can tri-fire.

The two I mentioned can do tri CrossfireX/SLI.

I will probably go the Maximus IV Extreme if I go for the 2600k or the rampage iii ext ream if I go with the 950... The cool temps at high clocks really tempts me with the 2600k

Getting 3, I have unlimited budget if I wait and get all of the stuff at the same time {don't ask why}

I haven't ordered them

Will a firmware upgrade cause the flashed 6950s to deactivate or revert to a normal 6950.

I would rather spend the $210 I would save on gpus on extra SSD memory

The 2600k will OC better then the 950, right?

The 2600K should overclock better, but no guarantees.
