AMD 955 Build - $1000 Canadian

Hey there everyone, I was looking to build an AMD 955 (3.2ghz) gaming computer around $1000 Canadian (after taxes), and I need help choosing out some parts. This is just a random build I came up with myself, but I have minimal knowledge on benchmarks with GPU's, MOBO's etc. Games in-mind (New COD: Black Ops), MW2, SC2, L4D2 etc.)

All items will be purchased though this site: www.canadacomputers.com, so if you can find a build that would work out, it would be greatly appreciated.

Items I don't need would be monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers, just the tower itself.

EDIT - The AMD Phenom seems like the way to go (price wise + more money spending on GPU). Still missing an AM3 socket board.

CPU (159.99) – AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition

Mobo (154.99) – Asus M4A89GTD PRO

RAM ($85.00) – G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB DDR3 1600MHz

CASE (62.99) - Cooler Master HAF 912

GPU (299.99) – Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5850

PSU (89.99) - OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W

HDD (79.99) - Western Digital Caviar Black
http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=1...

DVD DRIVE (Not sure any suggestions?)

Total: changed - before taxes, I can probably deal them down :p  (Done it before).

ANY suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

with that budget a amd build would be better... with

phenom ii x4 955

asus m4a79xtd evo

g.skill ripjaws 4gb ddr3 1600mhz -->CL7<-- (make sure of they are cl7)

samsung spinpoint f3 1tb

ati 5850

xfx 650w

I disagree on the AMD build...

You need to wait for AMD's 6000 series to come out and the 5000 series price drop, tom's claims 6000 series are slated for the 16th....

A better GPU is in order too!

why... phenom ii x4 955 + ati 5850 its better than i5 + 5770

Hmm, well I don't think I'll take advantage of all 6-cores on the new AMD builds, just a high-performing PC that could last 3-4 years.

of what 6cores are u talking about?

Like the new series of AMD's (1090T) etc. I want a simple but effective i5-quad build.

what resolution is your screen ? if bigger than 16*10
you will want more graphics HP

Uhmm tbh, I won't be playing max res like 1920x1080.

I feel comfortable with 1280x1024 but I mean in the late future maybe a high res would be nice.

^ What do you mean if I wait? I'm not in a rush but I can do 2-3 months before I actually go ahead, I just need some fixes (RAM/MoBo/GPU)

I am thinking about a slightly different gtx460+i5 760 build...

I was going to wait till black friday next month to buy for my new build.. Would it be wise to wait later?

I'd go with ATI, not to be a fanboy or anything, it WILL get cheaper.... 460 is hard pressed to beat the 5770... just to let you know. Black friday is fine, as long as you think you are getting the bets deal =p

The gtx 460 1 GB performs very closely to a Radeon 5850, so it's much faster than a 5770. Especially if you get the Hawk one, but that's $250.

Not according to the October best gpu for the price..... It is either in there, or the review of the 5770... Go check it out..

Excuse me, this is my thread. Can you post a different thread if you wanted some help? Kind of rude.

On-topic: atotalnoob, spentshells and mortonww can you NOT spam my thread please? I'm just kindly looking for some criticisms with my build and here you guys are arguing.

You could see it as knowledge to apply to your own build, just my opinion.

Well, I need some experienced advice on what people have tried out in the past and what seems to work best with i5 builds.

I mean I can just throw together some good parts (like I did) but have no practical knowledge how long it will last and how the benchmarks are compared to different builds. I have done a decent amount of research, I just want to hear a general opinion of what computer techs ought to say/critique about this build.

no im saying the scenarios used for testing favor the company that likely paid to have the article done ;)

Cloudy the build is good but take a step up from the 5770
5830 or 460 768Mb as a bare minimum if you can play alll the wayy to 1080p

@Spent, for 1080p you only need a 5670... about 25 fps though, so bad performance.

No way he should be using a 5670 to game at 1080p.

100% agree 5670 would be fun for bare minimum @ 1080 on an HTPC

AMD is a possibility, but the X6 is better then the i5, but it isn't the best... If you wanted to get Phenom X4, then I'd go with a 955...

get a Phenom II X4 955 or 965 just make sure they are Black Edition

No way you should get a 965, or 970.... They are the 955, just oc'ed and the 965 is locked in bios. black edition is correct.

Any more suggestions/criticisms/helpful information anyone?

I'm the type of guy that just goes with preferences, so Intel over AMD (I highly doubt I'll be using all 6-cores of the new ones anyway).

If you can come up with a build that is equally similar to quad-core i5 build, feel free to help me out and choose some parts. I plan on buying by the end of Oct.

The end of october might mean the price on 5000 series hasn't dropped. but nothin' other then Goodluck!

October 15, 2010 4:22:43 AM

Heh, I can probably stick with a 5770 because 5830/5850's are almost double in price. I don't mind sacificing the card to save and meet my budget.

If there is an AMD build in mind that can perform VERY CLOSE (benchmarks for i5 to AMD must be similar) please feel free to post anything.

*BUMP*

I have a feeling that the parts I have chosen don't seem to be perfectly compatible.
I do NOT plan to crossfire.

Still need advice on choosing:

RAM
GPU
CPU (I think the i5-760 is alright)
Mobo
PSU

I can do a bit over $1000 but try and stay around that range. I do need an optical drive aswell. For any parts & prices, please use http://www.canadacomputers.com/ since this is a local store where I will be ordering everything.

Hmm, I've read up a bit since the last post, and the verdict is that many games do not utilize more than 3 cores, therefore this so called "hyperthreading" does not even matter in most games.

Maybe an AMD 955 Black edition could be a better choice so I could go for a 5830/5850. Any suggestions, I still need some further clarifications

Depends... It'd be good for you probably. But think about longevity here. IMO 955 would be better

Your build looks OK, except the 5770 will hold you back if you're gaming, especially at higher resolutions.

I myself am running an i5 760, and did at one point run the 5770. I now run a GTX 480, and there is a big difference. Of course, the GTX 480 certainly isn't a budget card, but there are better cards out there than the 5770 for not a whole lot more in price.

Not really 5770 can get good results, on an i5 it is about even....
