I am looking for a good modular psu. Right now I have my eyes on either the HX750 or HX850 Corsairs. I already have a Pc Power and Cooling Silencer 750w PSU that works geat, but it is getting old and I'm thinking of pulling it out and keeping it as a back up. Basically, I want to be able to run my i7 860 @4ghz and also oc my 2 HD 6850's. I have 5 120mm 2000rpm fans in my case and 2 hdd. If anyone has any suggestions on which of those would be better for my system(or of another brand I should consider), I would appreciate the help. Thanks
Why ? Most hi end PSU's today are "hybrid modular". Simply put, what's the point of having detachable cables for cables that absolutely must be used ? The 24 pin MoBo power cable .... must be used ...... the 8 pin EPS cable ...must be used. For increased efficiency, most of the hi end guys are hard wiring the "necessary" cables and making the rest modular.
Here's an article on the subject where even Corsair echoes these concerns:
I'd put a bit more cushion in there (remember PSU's are most efficient at 50% load) and grab an 850 watter. The best buys here are the Antec CP-850 (requires compatible Antec case) and the XFX Black Edition 850 both of which are cheaper than the HX750
