It should do, it depends whether the BIOS is capable of backwards compatability. Generally AM3 is backward compatable with AM2+ processors.

Which MCP61PM-GM motherboard from ECS or is it a Gateway (and Emachines version) ?
Gateway states that it is a AM2 type motherboard
http://support.gateway.com/s/MOTHERBD/Shared/4006254R/4...

Look under specifications

http://support.gateway.com/s/MOTHERBD/Shared/4006254R/4...

"Supports AMD® AM2 Socket K8 Athlon™ 64 X2, Athlon™ 64, Athlon™ FX, and Sempron™ processors under 89 watt power consumption"

No AM2+ nor AM3+ CPU is listed as supported plus the Phenom X4 9850 is a 125 watt TDP CPU clearly above the 89 watts TDP stated (although they incorrectly stated 89 watt power consumption).

I too am wanting to upgrade my CPU in the same system. According to EMachines/Gateway the socket is an AM2, but AMD (as well as my CPU-Z) says it's an AM3 socket. So which is it?
