Antec SP-500 problem: won't post with SATA power

I think I've localized my problem to this: when I connect any of my hard drives to my PSU (an Antec SP-500) using the SATA power cables, my machine won't POST. If I use the 4-pin Molex cables instead, the machine boots fine. A wonky power supply, or might I have done something wrong? Thanks!

that psu series is known to have massive design issues that have been known to damage hard drives and motherboards due to excessive ripple. it should be replaced immediately!

Thanks everyone for your help. I had the option of switching to a newer computer, so I've done that - hard drives work just fine.
