Making A new Mid Ranged Gaming Machine

Was looking to build a gaming system with a budget of around $900 not including monitor, mouse, keyboard. All i really have my mind set on is an intel i5 cpu. Looking for some direction. Was looking to buy from one place.

  1. Ouch $900 with a GTS 450? If i were u i'd start with a HD 5850 GPU or better and work my way backwards for a half serious gaming rig with that price tag @@
  2. guess i need some serious help. With the video card you point out that's something like a third of my budget.
  3. This is the system i just built for $850:

CASE: COOLERMASTER CM 690 II ADVANCED
    MOTHERBOARD: EVGA P55 SLI
    CPU: INTEL I5 750 W/ STOCK FAN
    MEMORY: 4GB OF G SKILL DDR3 1600MHZ
HARD DRIVE: 1TB SAMSUNG SPINPOINT F3
GPU: EVGA GEFORCE GTS 450 SUPERCLOCKED
    PSU: COOLERMASTER SILENT PRO 600W
    CD/DVD: SAMSUNG CD/DVD BURNER

Newegg has a deal on the EVGA p55 sli motherboard and EVGA gts450 super clocked video card. You get a $40 discount when you buy the bundle.

It will run just about any game you have at high settings on a 1680X1050 Resolution.
  4. A video card in a gaming rig is supposed to be 1/3 of you budget or more. The GPU is what does the graphics. The only big things the CPU does are AI and Physics (if applicable).

    For gaming purposes

    Phenom II x4 955 $140
    GA-890GPA-UD3H $120
    4 G skill gb Eco ddr3 1600 7-8-7-24 kit $95
    spinpoint F3 $75
    Cm 690 II case $70
    Cheap SATA optical drive $17
    XFX 650 W $90 w/ $30 MIR
    5850 $260 w/ $20 MIR

$817 after rebates. Can probably combo for some more off.
  5. for that budget i definetly agree to support an AMD build with a good GPU such as a GTX 4601gb or a 5850 or even 5770 if you are at 1680x1050 but if your at higher resulutions get a beter GPU

    mosox's rig is really good

i have an AMD PHenom II X4 965 and I have no issues about it....save the $ get it and hey if u want to upgrade ur mobo in the future to an AM3+ ur old AM3 CPU will work in it. whereas lga 1156 is an obsolete technology when Sandy Bridge comes out

Conclusion: A Trend Toward 3+ Cores

The average optimal number of CPU cores suggested by the test results is 2.75, showing a clear trend towards at least three CPU cores. The question of whether the CPU or GPU is most important is easily answered. If you don't have a multi-core CPU, then upgrade it. If you have a dual-core CPU at around 3 GHz, then invest your money into a graphics card, as most games are GPU-limited. This is not something that will change with new DirectX 11 games.
