I currently have a P4 1.6 Ghz with an Intel 845MP chipset. I tried to
install a P4-M 2.5 Ghz both with 400 Mhz FSB. The computer would start
up and then freeze during the boot. Is there any possible reasons for
this and a solution?

Are you sure, that the board supports the CPU? If yes, does the Bios
support this? Are all coolers working, is the cooler specified for this
CPU (should work, Pentium M should not get hotter than P4)

Lots of questions, lots of thing that may go wrong. I think, if you had
upgraded to P4 1.8, the chance that it would work would be much higher.

Your BIOS might not support the processor. The voltage for the mobile
CPU might not be correct for the mainboard. Usually the only viable
upgrade path in a notebook is the same chip and chipset, same FSB, just
an incremental upgrade in processor speed. Notebook CPUs are pretty
tightly bound to the power and cooling as originally supplied. It could
be, then, a lack of power available or cooling capacity. That's a large
increase in both power required and cooling required and notebooks
normally do not have much surplus capacity in either.

This is not the ole days anymore, when you just popped in a new chip,
change the crystal, and voila, u got a faster running 'puter.

One series of cpu is usually not interchangeable with the next, even
if it got the same number of pins. The new serie is probably running
with lower voltage, and other details which you have to pool over the
specs. The pins assignments could has changed! Even on a desktop,
when I tried to replace my Pentium-III 1.0 to 1.4, I had to purchase a
adapter for it. An adapter will probably render a laptop upgrade not
practical.

Give it up :^) laptops are not (practically) upgradable no matter what
the marketing people told you.

Although you are right, some CPU chips can still be upgraded. I doubt
you can upgrade from a Pentium 4 to a Pentium M, but a P4 to P4-M
sounds very likely, because I think the power management stuff of the
P4-M is internal to the CPU. The voltages and such are probaby the
same, but that can be verified on the Intel data sheets.

Sometimes your upgrade is limited by the motherboard and the BIOS.
CPU lines tend to be released in a range - from 1.6GHZ to 2GHZ, 400MHZ
or 533MHZ FSB, etc. The laptop may be setup only to accept that
range.

Most laptop lines are also released with a range of performance
options, and that's a good guide to how you can upgrade your machine.
If the same basic model as sold at the time came with anywhere from a
1.6GHZ to 2GHZ Celeron, P4-M, or P4, chances are good you would be
able to upgrade your 1.6GHZ Celeron to a 2GHZ P4-M very easily. Note,
sometimes you can get a revised BIOS that will handle faster CPU
speeds also.

I have not updated the bios since i got the laptop. 04/02. Should
that be something I look at doing? I had a P4 in there and the one i
have is a p4-m. The computer tries to boot and it would kind of die
and just freeze. I think it may have to do with the settings, because
I looked up what max cpu i could use and it was a 400 mhz fsb and a
2.6 p4. What updates/settings should I try to tweak? Thanks
