Adding RAM to a new laptop, do sizes and brand need to match?
Sep 1, 2011, 10:32 PM
I have a new laptop on the way from Alienware, I ordered it with 4 gigs of DDR 3 1600Mhz RAM. This is in two modules. If I buy an additional 2x4GB gig modules, something like this:
Can I add in the two 4GB modules, along with the existing two 2GB modules, for a total of 12 gigs? The laptop has 4 slots, for up to 16 gigs of RAM.
Mainly, from a performance perspective:
1. Is it bad to have two different brands of RAM in the same laptop?
2. Can I have different size modules (2x2GB and 2x4GB) in the same laptop?

It is always suggested to avoid mixing brands and types of RAM...
That said there should not be any trouble doing so. You need to make sure the timings match though.
