Dell XPS M1210

I performed a diagnostics test, under the Hard Drive , DST short test failed. I have a dell XPS M1210, and am trying to see if it possible to replace the hard drive and which hard drive would I need to purchase. I looked up on google and it is bringing many different hard drives for XPS m1210. I am not sure which one to choose, and would a refurbished hard drive be a safe choice?

No point in buying the oem version... too expensive. Just find one from newegg or something. As long as it is a sata HD it should be compatible.

I have not recently backed up my old hard drive, and now that is dead I am wondering if there is a way to retrieve any data from the old hard drive before I try and install the new one.

Also before I toss it away I wold like to know how can I erase everything from the old hard drive, so nothing can be traced.

if the drive wont start you wont be able to recover anything from it .
