Can I put 512 mb in one memory slot and 1gb in the other memory slot?

I have a Dell 3000 desktop. I have 512 mb of memory in one slot, and have one empty slot. Can I simply add 1gb in the empty slot, leave the 512 mb in the original slot, and be ok?
