UT2004 keeps crashing at random times during gameplay. It usually just
puts up the bluescreen of death, but yesterday when it happened
(thrice), I finally saw a little dialog box that said "General
Protection Fault". Here are my specs, I've been through uninstalling and
reinstalling Motherboard, Sound and Video drivers, using System
Mechanic, etc. This only seems to happen in UT2004 (not UT2003, Far Cry,
etc.). (I have only not tried reinstalling the cumbersome 6 CD game
itself...)

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated...

Have these GPFs happened all the time or just after the recent game
patch? How much overclocking is going on with this system, and have
you tested the game with the oc ramped back? Performed a thorough
memory test recently?

I have been having the same problem ever since I patched to 3204. The game
had not crashed once before the latest patch. Now it crashes a couple times
a day. I've been submitting bug reports everytime it dies. All we can do
is wait for the next patch.

What rendering device is UT2004 using? This is set at the first line in
the [Engine.Engine] section of the UT2004.ini file. By default this is
set to:

RenderDevice=D3DDrv.D3DRenderDevice

But a friend of mine was able to eliminate the blue screen crashes by
changing it to the OpenGL renderer (possibly related to his off-brand
video card).

Also, take a look in this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson

There should be a .log file there, it would help greatly if you could
post what it contains after UT2004 crashes.

Are you using an adequate wattage output, stable power supply? That could
be it.

That may point to a hardware problem, cooling would be my first
thought, maybe the patch uses your hardware more agressively...

I found Defraging the hard drive cleared up any problems. Some how my
video drivers had gotten fragmented, and with all the extra maps, cache,
skins, etc, the UT2004 folder was bound to be a mess.

The patch is buggy, pure and simple. There are hundreds of people (that
I've personally seen in forums) complaining about the exact same problem.

I can guarantee that its not a hardware or cooling issue with my system. If
anything, my system is overcooled ... and also much louder than it needs to
be. The game is gonna utilize 100% cpu / gpu, patched or unpatched.

I'm sure Epic will fix the game, but I may revert back a rev until the next
patch is available.

More than likely, you're seeing the same dozen people bitching
multiple times :)

>I can guarantee that its not a hardware or cooling issue with my system.

But can you guarantee us that you know what you're doing? Nope :)
Real systems folks don't begin problem-solving with "it can't be
that", they think "maybe it could be that, wouldnt hurt to check".
Have you even tried ramping back your oc'd settings just to be sure?

Sorry that you're having problems and wish you speedy solutions, but
hyperbole is a poor way to start out the conversation.

Oh.. PS Jen..

[IpDrv.TcpNetDriver]
AllowDownloads=True

Change to False. It's in the ut2004.ini file.
