Hi,

I'm almost completing my new gaming build and I'm on a tight budget. I'm confused whether to buy a $200 GTX 460 for a $170 Samsung E2020X 20-Inch/$175 Samsung P2050 20-Inch or a $145 Sapphire 5770 for a $200 Samsung B2230H 22-Inch as these are the only options that will work within my budget. The cards will be bought online but the screens I'll buy at my local store with a $30 difference in price among them. I only have one pci-e slot on my Gigabyte ma785gm-us2h running an unlocked Phenom 555 BE so I'm looking to maximize on my initial investment as SLI or CF are not among my options at the moment.

I'm new to graphics equipment from LCD monitors to grfx cards so I don't want to get a combo that may not play along well or last as long as I had hoped, 2-3 years. I don't want to pick a screen only based on the size as I've read in many sites and forums that hdmi & dvi have the same picture quality but the B2230H doesn't seem to have speakers for the hdmi input to serve it's purpose so the only upper hand I can see it has is the size & resolution but correct me if I'm wrong please. I'm not a pro gamer so I mostly play titles that have been in the market from as far back as 3 years to the last 6 months but I'm very keen on detail.

When I ask people which choice to get between the 5770 & 460 most advice me to get the 460 but I hadn't factored in the screen prices & resolutions hence overall budget so please help me choose with that in mind.

Thanks in advance

I would say the 22 incher and the GTX460 1GB. That would be a good buy. If you are willing to stretch your budget a little!

Well, I've already stretched my budget way beyond the initial one and from what I've realized there will always be something better than what you want to buy. So, for the above options, which combo would you go for and why?

I'd love the 1920x1080 22 inch screen with the added hdmi option for plugging into my laptop but I don't want to get it if the 5770 won't perform well with that resolution for 2-3 years in which case I'd rather pick the best $200 gtx 460 and use it on the 20 inch screen @ 1600x900.

Hello
I agree with hell_storm about going with 22"/GTX 460, but if you can't,then go with the first option(GTX 460 and Samsung E2020X),because GTX 460 is noticeably faster than a 5770.(its actually comparable to HD 5830)

Check some benchmarks on the games you will be playing. The GTX460 is the better performer, but the HD5770 may be "enough." I also play mostly older titles. My monitor is 1920x1080. My primary PC has a HD5770 in it, but it is currently waiting for a SSD, so I'm using my other PC with "only" a HD4850 in it, with perfectly adequate performance. My primary games are definitely older (e.g. Guild Wars is something like 5 years old), but stay pegged at the 60Hz refresh rate on maxed settings. Particularly if you are willing to lower a setting, you may be satisfied with the cheaper alternative.
Of course, consider also if a monitor upgrade may be in your future. In that case, I'd probably get the GTX460 in anticipation of the bigger monitor later. If it isn't though, check those benchmarks!

I think I got a lucky break, I can get this combo http://www.newegg.com/Product/Comb [...] mbo.470418 for $240 and sell my friend the psu for $70 hence getting the Gigabyte gtx 460 768mb oc for $10 more than the Sapphire Vapor-X 5770 1gb. Well this will only happen if the deal lasts another week but if not I guess I'll just stick to the 5770 like jtt283 suggested as I can compromise on some settings like AA on the 1920x1080 screen.

If you sell that PSU, then do that deal.

This is an option for you. Only $5 more than your Samsung P2050.

It's 22" but only has d-sub. Or isn't there any notable difference between dvi and d-sub? by the way if this goes through and I get that combo, I will most probably get the Samsung B2230H as I had a $370 budget for the screen + grfx card. Unless you are saying the Samsung P2050 has better performance than the Samsung B2230H?

This is 1080p 23" and $170 with free shipping;
