My Intel i7 860 is having some huge overheating problems. I'm idling at 50-60 C and anytime I go to play any game it rises to temperatures above 80 C, usually topping out at 99 C. It is not overclocked at all. I ordered an aftermarket heatsink - do you think this can fix it or is something else going on?

The aftermarket heatsink will probably solve it. What case do you have and how is the airflow (also say other large components like graphics card, PSU etc.) these things can make a substantial difference (I would know, adding a second push-pull fan on my CM Hyper 212+ actually lowered my Crossfire 5770 temperatures lol).
Which aftermarket heatsink did you order?

you might not have placed the original heatsink correctly

Yes, idle temp should be more like this...

Idling I can get down to 36 C at the lowest. But the moment I bring up firefox I may hit 50 C. When I do games it will get even higher. It must be the heatsink. Maybe I didn't spread the thermal paste correctly, but either way, the new heatsink will definitely help.

Got the new heatsink and reapplied the thermal paste. Temperatures are great now, I idle around 24-30C. Highest temperatures I am seeing are around 45 C. Thanks!
