Volume sliders stay at lowest setting=no matter what

I don't know why this started to happen, but all the volume sliders on my computer (desktop running XP) have moved to the lowest setting and if I move them louder (sound returns when moved) they move back all by themselves and will not stay where I can hear anything. Is this software problem or sound card problem or virus? HELP!!
