Picking ram for i5 2500k on Asus P8Z68

I am upgrading my CPU/mobo/ram on my gaming PC. I plan on overclocking, nothing too extreme.

So go for the fastest mhz chip my board can run, DDR3 2200, or get a slower ram with lower CAS and better timing.

The difference between CAS timings is negligible. Don't bother with low CAS memory, you'll only run into compatibility problems.

Higher performance RAM than DDR3 1600 has virtually no effect on gaming unless you are using integrated video. Even DDR3 1600 is only slightly (unnoticeable)better than DDR3 1333.

Since a lot of DR3 1600 is almost identical in price to 1333 I suggest it but anything faster is a waste of money for gaming.
The only real world benefit of high performance RAM I remember is compression/decompression or for AMD's Fusion processors.

Would I be able to overclock my i5 2500k higher with higher speed ram?

Sorry Im a noob to this, currently I have my E7500 running at 3.85ghz, 11x350, which makes my ram 875mhz, its DDR2 800mhz. If I got much higher the system wont start, I assume this is because my ram is being pushed too far? The E7500 is not getting too hot and my mobo can handle 1066. So under this logic couldnt I OC more with a higer speed ram?

This is exactly why you got a 'k' processor. The k denotes that the core cpu speed and memory speed are unlocked from one another, so you can take the cpu to higher speeds without it affecting ram speed. With a 'k' cpu, overclocking is as simple as going into the bios, setting the cpu multiplier to manual, and setting it to 43, 44, or 45 (corresponding to 4.3, 4.4, or 4.5 GHz). You'll see that when you do this, the ram speed remains unaffected. Sweet.

Interesting 'stuff', if Gaming is the purpose then get DDR3-1600 CAS 8/9 in 4GB/stick density. Nice article -> http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/memory/2011/01/11/the-... The DDR3-1600 CAS 8/9 is the Sandy Bridge's Gaming sweet-spot.

My favorite 8GB Set is the G.SKILL Ripjaws X F3-12800CL8D-8GBXM and they behave well in 2 sets or 4x4GB if ever needed e.g. Adobe or other rendering applications. Obviously, you'll need a 64-bit OS to address >4GB of RAM.

The faster RAM Frequency with lower CAS does indeed help in certain situations, but also adds some instability and the last thing you need is a BSOD in a middle of a game.
