Front Panel USB issues

I just figured out my front panel USBs are not fully functional. I can't be sure if this is a recent development or it has been a problem since I built the rig.
• Intel C2Q q9550 – Tuniq T-120-LFB
• ASUS P5Q Pro Motherboard
• Ram 2 x 2g Cors 6400C5 R
• VGA Visontek 900250 HD4870 X2 2G RT
• Hard drives 1T Samg 7K 32M SATA2 and 500G WD 7K 16M
• Running Windows 7 Home Premium 64
• Cosmos Cooler Master 1000
• Acer 22” DVI AL2216WBD
I was having a problem installing drivers for my new phone (Samsung Captivate). I kept getting a error message "device not recognized". No problem coppying files and charging devices. I finally solved the problem by connecting to a rear USB port. After that things worked fine. I tried a couple of other devices and found the same problem occured. I assume the front panel USBs on my case are not working properly. I have not yet updated my MB bios as I have seen several post on problems with the update. Any thoughts on a diagnosis and fix?
thanks in advance

Well, you are right. The Asus P45 boards seem to have had USB issues, at least the first generation.

I did fix some minor USB issues on my P5Q-E with a BIOS update. It was a dice-roll of course but safer than with many boards.

Another option might be a simple addon card.
Has one internal USB header

I think they make external to internal cables also....
I think that's the right one.
