Hello,

I saved lots of photos on a new external hard drive. My computer did not ask me to format it. Later, when I plugged it in again, I'm told I have to format it to use it, thereby losing all data. Foolishly, the pictures are not backed up elsewhere. Is there any way to recover them?

You could not have saved anyting on it if it was not formatted...
So somehow something broke by the time you replugged it in..
If yui agreed to the reformat it will be tricky to get the stuff back
Sure someone can link some software that may do it..

But yes.. you are an idiot not to have a backup of important stuff like personal phots etc.

Cheers

You should remember to format a new drive firstly and back up your important data regularly in the future.
However, now, in that situation, you need a third-party drive recovery tool to save your photos and format this drive to save it afterwards.
I know there is a drive recovery freeware recommended by my friend as my WD external hard drive becomes inaccessible. It is easy to use as you follow the guidance.
If you want to try it, you could get it there: http://blog4mark.blogspot.com/2012/12/recover-deleted-p...
Important note: You should format it after all of your photos are recovered completely.
You should preview your photos to see whether all your photos are recovered rightly.
Good luck!
