Network driver

I have reinstalled window xp on my dell computer. All goes well until when I install the driver for the network card my compter then it starts to hang on starup and won't start at all. I go into safe mode and uninstall the driver and it comes right. Could it be faulty network card which is on board or could it be software.

Yes it is the original one off the dell resource disk that came with the computer
