Hi group, I have a problem with the IBM R40 for no apparrent reason the
screen is blank on start up, I have connected the machine to an external
monitor and it works fine. I have reinstalled xp and drivers from IBM but
have made no difference. I see that the Toshiba has an issue with loose
connector to the screen. Has anyone else had this problem with IBM's or know
a sloution.
thanks in advance.

Inverter or backlight issues.. Shine a light from the top down and se
if you can see the video operating in the background.. (most likely
will be).. If you need help just yell.

The R40 is prone to getting its screen-off-button stuck in the down
position. (like a refrigerator light switch that gets stuck in the
off-position) I've helped people fix the problem by taking a very
small screwdriver and working GENTLY with the button until it comes
unstuck.
FYI, the little black button i'm referring to is above the keyboard
just below the screen hinge.
from there, you can cut/shave-off the plastic that pushes the button
let me know if this helps

Folks, thanks for the responses, I tried the light on the
screen as suggested by ikenfixit and noted with dread
that it appeared that the system was starting up very
faintly. I as about to delve into the realm of inverters and
stuff I had no idea about until I stuck a small scredriver
on the button as described by Phil and the screen came
back to life. A Big Thank you guys.
