Dear Forum,

My old Dell X1 is such a nice size computer; I would like to be able to use it still. Is there any way to upgrade it so that it is usable? It is a Pentium M running Win Xp at 1.1GHz. 322MHz 1.24 GB RAM. I have a 20 GB hard drive, 420rpm.

I read in another forum that 2GB of RAM could be put in it. The max is supposed to be 1.2GB, according to Dell. Is this possible?

Would it help to go to a SSHD?

When running a standard load of applications (Google Chrome, a stock trading program, and a Word Doc), Task Manager has the following: CPU: 4% to 98%, Page File Usage 3.6GB, Limit 4.1GB. It runs really slow like this.

Is there any hope?

Thanks a bunch!

Mike

I found that Google Chrome notches the PF usage up by ~.5GB per browser page. Opera barely moves the PF level per window! I am now operating at 1.1GB with 5 browser windows open, and two stock trading programs!

I love my little X1, and upgraded it recently with the following:
1. Replaced 1GB RAM with 2GB ($30).
2. Replaced 60GB 5200RPM hard drive with a 128GB SSD ($125).
3. Picked up a new double capacity battery.

I installed Windows 7 and Office 2010.

It now boots up in about 10 ~ 15 seconds and also runs much cooler because of the lack of a spinning drive.

Hi, can I ask you to be more precise:
- how did you get the X1 to accept more than 1.25 GB
- from where did you get an Intel 2200 WiFi driver for W7
- which SSD drive did you use, brand and type please
I could not find any solution for all of the points above, so if you have your X1 improved in this way I would be really happy to get to know how...:bounce:
Cheers
