My laptop recently broke and I am in need of a new computer. I want to play Starcraft 2 on ultra quality, as well as upcoming games on high quality. My problem is, I have never bought a computer :D, I've been using my brother's old one for the last few years.

Approximate Purchase Date: Sometime this week to about 2 weeks from now.

Budget Range: $500-800 after rebates.

System Usage from Most to Least Important: gaming, surfing the web, school work, watching movies

Parts Not Required: keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers.

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: none

Country of Origin:US

Parts Preferences: None

Overclocking: Maybe (don't really know what it is :( )

SLI or Crossfire: Maybe (don't really know what it is)

Monitor Resolution: up to 1400 x 1050

Additional Comments: Which would be more cost effective- building my own pc or ordering one pre-built from companies like HP? My concern with the pre-built would be that I have no experience in building so I would have to completely rely on online guides and that I would also have to buy an operating system (most likely windows 7) along with all the other parts.

I customized this off hp.com

Building your own PC is fun and easy. You have a tutorial above, many more on the internet including YouTube videos. That configuration above is bad, bad CPU, weak video card etc etc.

The video card is overkill for your resolution, useful for when you change the monitor with a full HD one.

Otherwise there are cheaper combos like that one (less powerful GPU but a better CPU):

MSI N460GTX Cyclone 768D5/OC GeForce GTX 460 + AMD Phenom II X4 955

or you could possibly wait on the announcement of the 6xxx Series and let the 5xxx series prices drop.
