DVD drive unknown in device manager

Hi guys,

I have recently formatted my hard drive and reinstalled Windows 7 x64.

My DVD drive is 'Unknown' in the device manager and cannot read or write any data, even though the drive did work when using the disc to install Windows 7.

I have tried the steps in the following answer on another thread, but they did not work http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/261263-14-dvdrw-drive-unknown-device-manager#t1818322

Has anyone got any idea for me?

Thanks,

Jared

  1. After re-installing Windows, did you re-install all the motherboard drivers from your PC or motherboard manufacturer's website? If no, do so now.
  2. After posting this, I noticed that whenever I restart my computer, sometimes it would work, and the next restart it wouldn't... very strange. It was getting really annoying as I wanted to install some of my games again. I've just looked inside, and the power cable was a bit loose. After switching back on, it seems to be working again, let's just hope it continues to work now. It was very coincidental that the power cable became loose when I formatted.

    Thanks for you help.
  3. After rebooting again, the dvd drive is again unknown. I'm getting close to formatting again.
