Seeking input on my first build, ~$900 Gaming PC

Hey TH build community,

I am looking for some advice on this build. I'm looking to spend under $1000, but maintain a beefy gaming system. I'm not looking to go hardcore with graphics and demand the everything on highest settings all the time, but I'd like to get as close to that as possible without going over budget. I'll mainly be using it for MMO/FPS games such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, Final Fantasy XIV, and Diablo 3 when it hits shelves :P. I'm also looking for it to stay with me for about the next 5 years like the one I'm using right now has :).

Here's the specs:

CPU ASUS Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition 3.2GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard ASUS M4A89GTD PRO ATX AMD Motherboard

CPU Fan COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus RR-B10-212P-G1 120mm sleeve CPU Cooler

GPU ASUS Radeon HD 5850 (Cypress Pro) EAH5850 DIRECTCU/2DIS/1GD5 Video Card w/ Eyefinity

Memory G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory

Hardrive Western Digital Cavjar Black 1TB 3.5" SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

Case Antec Three Hundred Black Computer Case
DVD Drive LITE-ON 24X DVD Writer Black SATA Model iHAS424-98 LightScribe Support

Grand Total: $861.91

What do you guys think?

  1. Looks pretty solid to me, seems like you did your research. Nice rig.

Also, nice formatting, very easy to read

    Thanks!
  3. I like your build!

If you feel like going all the way up to your $900 budget, here's a couple things to think about:
-You could spend ~30-40 more on a Cooler Master 922 case. I have the Antec 300, and I think its great for the price, but I find that its not a very quiet case... Especially that big fan on top, and yes even with the case fans on their lowest settings. You could even just spend a little more on a Cooler Master 912, but I don't know how that compares to the Antec 300
-You could also spend ~40 more on a Corsair H50 CPU cooler! Even if you don't overclock a tonne, it would still keep things quiet and cool, which is always good :)

Any specific reason for the memory switch?
  5. A dollar cheaper for the same specs/brand. I mean, if you want the ripjaw's 'ripjaw', then by all means, but I see no reason for it.
  6. Oh okay :) Just wasn't sure if you thought there was a flaw with the ripjaws, but thanks for the input! Any other comments regarding the build?
  7. Not bad but with Asrock 870 being 8/8 CFable most 890GX are overpriced i feel so

60GB Sandforce based SSD $125 Free Ship
  8. I would spend the money on a better case/ram before the SSD.
  9. You could get a better card if you wait another week for AMD to drop the 6 series cards. The 6870 will be released next week and rumor is that it will be priced around $250, if anything 5 series prices should drop as well.
