Replacing Thermal Paste on a 3870 x2

Hey there,

I wanted to replace the thermal paste on my Saphire ATI Radeon 3870 x2. Now I found some strange pads on those black squares (I guess these are the Ram's). But on that black things is that thermal paste as well which I have to replace or is that just to release some pressure from that black things.
