Best GPU with Processor

What would be the best GPU for an AMD Phenom II X4 965? I loved Tom's article about building a Balanced System but am curious what you guys think. Right now I'm leaning towards a 4870 since all I plan on playing is Star Craft II and SWTOR (I'm sure it can handle that no problem). Would I see a huge difference by getting a 5850 or would the CPU bottleneck start? I figure I can't go wrong with 1 gig of DDR5 RAM and 256-bit memory interface. DX11 isn't a big deal for me.

  1. What resolution do you play at? What is your budget? And do you ever plan on adding monitors to game on?
To answer your last question, no your 965 would not bottleneck a 5850.

Playing at 1920 x 1200, 1 monitor only. My budget is $1500 MAX but the more I don't have to spend, the better.

Yes,you would notice a difference.Especially when you turn up the settings higher. The 4870 is still a great card ,its just the 5850 has DirectX11.Also if you want, you could benchmark to see the numerical difference. The 5850 is not killing the 4870 in numbers.I always measure how good a card is by price/versus/performance.Out of 1-10 score I would rate the 4870 a 7.25 and the 5850= 8.0Me personally,I would go with a 5830.You get good price & DirectX-11http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125317 AND THIS TOO<><><><><><>http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127491

Works for me! Thanks for the help.
  5. why not go for the gtx460 if your looking at the 5830?? better performance, phsyx and great overclocking ability.
  6. @ 1920x1200 you really should play with an ATI 5850 or GTX 470 to get 60FPS or better with most titles.

The GTX 460 1GB would get you by if you're okay with 30fps in newer titles. If you do a 460, get the MSI Cyclone 1GB. Don't settle for the 768MB version with your resolution.

Again, for your resolution, if you like high graphic settings, I'd do a 5850/470 or SLI something lesser (SLI GTX 460 which will beat out the GTX 480).

Since I'm going with AMD, I'd stick with a 5850. Thanks for the help.

Good call. I put a 5850 in my brother's PC when I helped him build it. :)
  9. You won't be disappointed with the 5850. Good luck!
