Transfer OS to SSD from HDD?

Alright, so I am getting a new SSD tomorrow, and I want to know whether or not it is possible, or if it's even recommended, to be able to transfer the OS to the SSD without a format. I have several hundreds of gigabytes of files that I would hate to have to re-acquire after a format, so I would really be happy if there was a way to transfer without the need of that.

I have a full Windows 7 disc by the way, not an OEM, so I was thinking maybe just take out the hdd and install it onto the ssd, and then afterward connect the HDD. But I'm not sure if that would work out. Anyone know if this is possible?

I like your plan. "I was thinking maybe just take out the hdd and install it onto the ssd, and then afterward connect the HDD"

What you suggest is the preferred method but yes you can clone your hdd to the ssd and then swap the ssd in and afterwards reinstall the hdd and wipe it.
