Hello,
I have a 2500 compaq notebook where the keyboard keys are not responding.
However, external keyboards (USB, etc.) work. Also, the touchpad and
function keys work fine. I was thinking about replacing the keyboard, but
wanted to know if there are some other troubleshooting things to try first?

Remove the KB in Device Manager, reboot. If that doesn't help, then
open the case and check the cable connection at the mainboard. Since
the function keys work, I am suspicious that it might simply be loose.
