I just recently purchased a 4TB Hitachi Deskstar 7K4000. When it arrives, it'll be my first HDD above 2TB and I have no idea how I'm going to format it. I did a little research and apparently my PC will initially detect it as 2 smaller drivers. Obviously this is a problem for me as I want it only as one.
As far as my research goes, I have to format it to GPT. Is this really necessary? Also, what are the main differences between NTFS and GPT?
OS: Windows 8
MB: ASRock Z77 Extreme4 (it has UEFI which is apparently relevant to this discussion)
GPT is an alternative to MBR, related to partitioning. MBR only supports a maximum of 2 TB. NTFS is the filesystem, which can still be used with a 4TB drive. I just added a Hitachi Deskstar 3 TB drive to my system, so I can help if you don't know how to set up a GPT partition.
