We need to know at minimum what GPU slot you have AGP or PCIexpress. Full system specs would be in order.

What is your current card?
PSU? brand? model?

Well, the best AGP card is HD4670 AGP version, but it's expensive and will be bottlenecked by your Pent.4, so you'll better with HD3850 AGP...

+1, We need your full PC specifications including your PSU and case.

In your case you can upgrade however I'd advise a complete overhaul of your PC, $500 will get you a decent gaming PC.

PCI express does not work in PCI. The cards you need to look at are HD4650/70 for AGP slot.
And ones again "It does not matter what type of ram is installed on your card since it has nothing to do with your system memory" if that was the case everybody that have cards with GDDR5 ram would be waiting for DDR5 to come out for systems so they could use their cards.

The best thing to do is to upgrade the whole thing. Buying a new motherboard for your old P4 is not a good option. An AMD athlonII build is probably the cheapest option these days. Reading this would be a good start http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/288241-31-read-postin...

Yes if you can replace some of the parts with what you got it is fine. I just put it up as an example. Minimum gaming cards would be HD4650/70, HD5570, 9600GSO or GT and GT240 based on what you get for the best price.

Yes it will even I7 920 which is way better runs at 2.66GHz at stock. The 3.2 GHz is referring to older CPU´s like P4 and Athlon 3200+
