You aren't looking very hard if all you find is "boombox style" whatever
that is. A number of Japanese home-market models are available in the US,
including the Sony handhelds (not the Clies, the U-series Vaios that run
XP), and the major manufacturers typically have several product lines of
varying sizes.

Further, while that white touchpad may look snarfy in the store, I wonder
how it's going to look after a few months of use.

Don't know about "distinctive looking" but IBM, Acer, and Toshiba have a
number of models without "prominent speakers". In fact "prominent
speakers" seem to be a rarity unless you have a different value of
"prominent" than I do.

Personally I don't care all that much what it looks like, I care how it
works. IBM had some magnesium-cased models a while back--gave it up as a
bad job and went to carbon-fiber.

I notice that a number of HP models appear to have white or very light
colored touchpads.

If given the choice between form and function, I'd imagine that
most people would spend their hard earned dollars on the latter.

I have to agree; and my wife has really wanted an entirely white laptop (not
Apple) because it will be kept in a location that's on display in our house.
