Ya know, everybody tend to buy a notebook from a major vendor 'cuz
it's safer, but they tend to be sooooo boring, cheap-looking, don't
get me started about the Compaq's boombox-like notebooks.

Here is a cool looking generic notebook made in Taiwain(?) with white
trims, white keyboard, white touchpad, a touch of cool I say.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.d [...] 5154741072

I've been to Asia and they got cool-and-small notebooks not available
in the U.S. I just wish we had something like those here, or do
Americans in love with their 17" <ewww> slaps?

BTW, I know about dynamism, they got a skeletal selection however.

Oh, please. If you want an interesting looking notebook, check out

I would like to have an iBook, just wish it was a bit thinner and have
an Intel processor. I don't care either way but my employer just
happend to use lots of Wintel applications, and am not interested in
emulations.

Alienware... cool. Again, the boombox style, not my cut of tea.

You aren't looking very hard if all you find is "boombox style" whatever
that is. A number of Japanese home-market models are available in the US,
including the Sony handhelds (not the Clies, the U-series Vaios that run
XP), and the major manufacturers typically have several product lines of
varying sizes.

Further, while that white touchpad may look snarfy in the store, I wonder
how it's going to look after a few months of use.

Sony makes the only notebooks that are attractive to me. I own two
Z505s and bought them 'cuz it's purple! Love the granite-feel
magnesium casing, the newer models are more polished-looking and don't
look as distintive as the Z505 series.

boombox style=prominent speakers (who are we kidding, yer never gonna
get good sound with ANY built-ins), lotsa buttons, for your 12-22
yr-olds. I guess I am looking for cool-sophisticated, something
distintive yet my wife won't feel like to total geek when using it.

I noticed that. But you know what, I would be willing to take it apart
every year or so, clean&polish it. The price to pay for being
different. :D

Don't know about "distinctive looking" but IBM, Acer, and Toshiba have a
number of models without "prominent speakers". In fact "prominent
speakers" seem to be a rarity unless you have a different value of
"prominent" than I do.

Personally I don't care all that much what it looks like, I care how it
works. IBM had some magnesium-cased models a while back--gave it up as a
bad job and went to carbon-fiber.

I notice that a number of HP models appear to have white or very light
colored touchpads.

Hi Bobb,

Yes I love my 17" HP Pavilion zd7010us laptop. I've actually owned
it and am not interested in buying anything new after 14 months of
use which is rare for me since I normally upgrade every year or so.

If given the choice between form and function, I'd imagine that
most people would spend their hard earned dollars on the latter.

If this were the case with cars we'd all be driving the mid-80s Dodge
K-Class. :-)

No, there'd probably be more people driving Toyotas than Ferraris.

If they were the same price don't be too sure.

I have to agree; and my wife has really wanted an entirely white laptop (not
Apple) because it will be kept in a location that's on display in our house.

Hey, go for a Sony. Great looking. Better than average performance.

Until you need support. Or service. Or parts.

Thanks, I'll keep my Toyota! <g>

That's right, a Land Rover is not for everyone.

Interesting. Keep them coming.

Althought I'm not into "retro." Reminds of those fade-out wood
paneling of station wagons of the 70s.
