I am working with a volunteer organization (very limited budget) and want to use a 2005 era Dell GX280 as a small file server. It currently has a 40gb SATA hard drive and I want to upgrade to to something in the 750gb to 1tb range.

I am concerned about compatibility with newer SATA standards and am wondering if anyone has any recommendations/experience with an upgrade like this.

The GX280 has Dell Bios A04 dated 2/9/2005, Intel Pentium 4 2.8ghz processor, Intel 915G (Grantsdale-G) mobo, and Intel 82801FB ICH6 I/O controller chipset.

Any recommendations for a hard drive?

Thanks

You needn't worry about SATA compatibility as the two SATA revisions (SATA II & SATA III) are both backwards compatible, which means a SATA II or SATA III hard drive is compatible with a first-generation SATA system.

Maximum hard drive capacity for the GX280 = 2TB

I can't recommend a specific hard drive model, but I have found WD & Samsung brands to be the most reliable.

Thanks - that's exactly what I wanted to know.
