What is raid and do I need it to run one ssd?

I'm getting an SSD, and I have no idea what raid us. What is it? And do I need it for one SSD?

RAID is putting multiple hard drives or solid state drives together in an array. Typically RAID will need a minimum of two drives. With that being said you do not need RAID to have a(n) SSD
