Smart respose technology with windows 8

I have an asus p8z77 mother board and am trying to set up smart response technology. The directions say to install the os on the hard drive and not the ssd so I unplug the ssd and leave the Seagate 3TB drive but during os installation windows 8 can't find the 3TB hard drive. I've also noticed in the Bios it will show the drives if I plug them in individually on the drive priority screen but if they are both plug in it only shows the ssd and the cd/dvd drives. Is this a problem with windows 8 and the 3TB hard drive compatibility? Would it work better with a 1 or 2 TB hard drive instead. Any info may help at this point. I'm becoming completely frustrated.
