Hello, I am attempting to upgrade a coworkers laptop. She is running Vista on 768MB DDR2 667mhz (one 512MB and one 128MB). I suggested to install two new modules (2 x 1GB or 2 x 2GB).

My question is (I have never done this before) since we are changing both slots, could we install at 800mhz? Is it the motherboard that determines if it will accept 800mhz or the slowest ram chip?

It is an Acer Aspire 3100 notebook.

Thank you very much in advance!!!!!!!!!

The motherboard will default the RAM to the same clock speed if one was rated for a higher speed than the other. Additionally, you'll want to make sure what the maximum amount of RAM the laptop can support even is before buying the appropriate modules (1gb vs 2gb, etc.).
