my onboard jack has some problems, I wud hav to push the headphone jack REAL HARD before I can hear the right channel, so I'm planning on gettin a real cheap CMI8738, seems to be generic or sumthing. But wat matters is the chipset ryt? is the CMI8738 chipset any where comparable to my old DG31PR's onboard audiO? shud I get a branded one?

If you aren't a real audiophile, you should be fine. Onboard audio is usually low-end, so there's not much further low you can go. If you are trying to replace a broken onboard component, and are not looking for high performance, a cheap card should work just fine for you.
